HIV & Prostatitis |
Prostatitis may cause complications for HIV infected men.Reduced Resistance to Infection: because of lowered immune responses, it is difficult for HIV infected people to fight-off infections. This makes the occurance of an infection more serious. An undetected infection could spread quickly and further damage an already weakened immune system. Increased Viral Burden: infections cause otherwise dormant, HIV infected white blood cells to wake up and produce more HIV, thus increasing the person's viral burden. If an infection is undetected and left untreated, the viral burden could continue to climb. Increased Resistance to Antiviral medications: since the prostate is particularly resistant to penetration by many drugs, the HIV infected cells which reside in the prostate will receive a lower dosage of some antivirals. This could allow HIV replication to continue and could lead to outgrowth of resistant strains of virus. This could lead to failed therapy (see article). Moreover, an infection in the prostate could continuely draw more HIV infected white blood cells into the prostate. Elevated Viral Burden in Semen: the prostate adds fluids and cells to semen; if a man has prostatitis there could be an elevated level of HIV in the prostate, which could be added to semen, making the man more contagious during sexual activity. |

The Fixed Prostatitis Test Kit includes a patented fixative that preserves the entire specimen for analysis. This means the specimen is not time-sensitive and can be sent via regular mail. The analysis includes:
